The global ecotourism community is promoting a unique event to evaluate the two decades since the Quebec Convention (2002), to tackle current challenges by sharing good practices, and to propose a set of recommendations and a roadmap for the next decade.
GEF2025 is a global event hosted by the Government of Catalonia with the support of the Global Ecotourism Network (GEN) –the world’s leading network of ecotourism experts with a presence on all 5 continents–, and many other institutions and partners.
From 19 to 23 May 2025, Barcelona’s surrounding countryside and Catalonia’s network of protected natural areas will host this unique event.
In August 2022, Barcelona-Catalonia’s application to host GEF2025 was formally ratified. Catalonia’s strengths include its experience in hosting major sustainability events and its pioneering and continuous action in promoting ecotourism in Spain and Europe. As well as its diverse network of well-preserved protected natural areas (32% of its territory), one of the most biodiverse regions in Europe.
